Non-Maximal Definites in Romance

چکیده

Mainly based on data from Old Spanish and Modern Francoprovençal, this paper discusses a hitherto underresearched use of the Romance definite article that cannot straightforwardly be explained by recurring to any standard analyses semantic definiteness, i.e., maximality and/or familiarity. We show such weakly referential definites are with representative object interpretations licensed kind-oriented mode talk not short weak definites. They denote inherently non-specific, semantically number neutral regular objects whose only co(n)textual relevance is their being typical instantiations corresponding kind. Weak Definites

An alternative approach to the semantics of definite descriptions was proposed by Heim in her dissertation [1982]. Heim assigns to pragmatics a larger part of the task of specifying the meaning of definite descriptions than the neo-Russellians do. In Heim’s theory, definite and indefinite NPs are semantically equivalent, and both introduce free variables. The truth conditions proposed by Heim f...

Non-Obvious Conceptual Structure: Evidence from Weak Definites

It would appear that the concepts NEWSPAPER, DOCTOR, BUS, and BANK have nothing in common that distinguish them from concepts like MAGAZINE, SURGEON, CAR, and HOTEL. Nevertheless, definite noun phrases containing words corresponding to the two sets of concepts are interpreted differently. For example, ”John went to the surgeon and Bill did too” is interpreted as involving a specific surgeon who...

A note on maximal non-prime ideals

The rings considered in this article are commutative with identity $1neq 0$. By a proper ideal of a ring $R$,  we mean an ideal $I$ of $R$ such that $Ineq R$.  We say that a proper ideal $I$ of a ring $R$ is a  maximal non-prime ideal if $I$ is not a prime ideal of $R$ but any proper ideal $A$ of $R$ with $ Isubseteq A$ and $Ineq A$ is a prime ideal. That is, among all the proper ideals of $R$,...

Designer Definites in Logical Form

In this paper, we represent singular definite noun phrases as functions in logical form. This representation is designed to model the behaviors of both anaphoric and non-anaphoric, distributive definites. It is also designed to obey the computational constraints suggested in Harper [Har88]. Our initial representation of a definite places an upper bound on its behavior given its structure and lo...

Seemingly Indefinite Definites

From the time of Bertrand Russell, the semantics of the English definite article has been the object of continued semantic analysis. Most analyses make some use of the notions of uniqueness, or familiarity, however defined more precisely (see for instance Roberts, 2003, for one recent analysis and review). In this paper, though, we wish to motivate through both experimental and non-experimental...
